The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) is a world-class ensemble with a rich history dating back to 1956. The orchestra’s adoption of a season-based programming model reflects its commitment to artistic excellence and aligns with global standards.
Since 2012, the orchestra's collaborative spirit has led to remarkable partnerships with a diverse range of celebrated international and Chinese musicians, including Xu Zhong, Isaac Stern, Martha Argerich, Itzhak Perlman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Peter-Lukas Graf, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Jessye Norman, Joe Hisaishi, Yo-yo Ma, Tan Dun, Kong Xiangdong, Liao Changyong, and Lang Lang, resulting in many memorable concerts.
The SPO's international presence is substantial. Since 1997, it has embarked on extensive tours across numerous countries, including Korea, Italy, Switzerland, France, Singapore, Australia, Slovakia, Hungary, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, the United States, and Turkey, earning prestigious awards such as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s “Excellent Project of Culture Export.” Strategic partnerships with renowned orchestras, such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, further solidify its global standing.
The Shanghai Philharmonic Foundation is dedicated to fostering excellence in the musical arts. Its core mission is to support and promote the comprehensive development of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. This is achieved through a multi-faceted approach encompassing artistic innovation, performance excellence, music education and outreach, and international collaboration.
Beyond performance, the Foundation is deeply invested in music education and outreach. Its funding initiatives bring high-quality music education to schools and communities, including public lectures, to cultivate appreciation for music and nurture future generations of musicians.
The Foundation also actively supports the orchestra's participation in international music festivals and collaborations with renowned international ensembles.
